Embers of Empowerment, 2016–ongoing
This evolving project merges traditional documentary approaches, such as cataloging and collecting, with experimental techniques to delve into the vibrant world of contemporary witchcraft. Through captivating photographs, "Embers of Empowerment" celebrates the inclusivity of Reclaiming, a feminist tradition rooted in social justice, environmentalism, and personal empowerment.
For several years, I immersed myself in Reclaiming gatherings and rituals, building trust with practitioners and capturing their unguarded moments. Initially, I focused on their hands — the conduits of power, healing, creation, and magic. These hands weren't mere appendages; they symbolized their connection to nature, community, self-expression, and the very essence of Reclaiming. Each hand tells a unique story, whispering of the transformative power inherent within us all. The array of hands, diverse in form and expression, suspended against a stark black backdrop, showcase the various paths to self-discovery and empowerment at the heart of Reclaiming.
Intertwined with these portraits are a series of long-exposure photographs capturing rituals at a secluded Northern Californian witch camp. Bathed in the warm glow of a crackling bonfire, these evocative images reveal the essence of community and connection that binds this tradition together. They offer a glimpse into the transformative magic that unfolds when individuals gather under the starry sky to celebrate their shared values and beliefs.
"Embers of Empowerment" challenges preconceived notions and invites viewers to embrace the inherent magic within themselves. It fosters a deeper understanding of our individual and collective potential for growth and empowerment, offering a portal into the vibrant world of Reclaiming where diverse practitioners become gateways to a deeper understanding of magic, connection, and belonging.
